Bullet For My Valentine: Scream, Aim, Fire

Bullet For My Valentine: Scream, Aim, Fire

28th January 2008 | by Aidan Williamson

It takes a great band to encapsulate the essence of their idols. Guns 'n' Roses, Metallica and Iron Maiden are distilled to perfection in Scream, Aim, Fire.

With songs that twist via dizzying complexity from pounding double bass to soaring sing-a-longs Bullet For My Valentine have perfected their unique brand of metal.

Whilst most bands opt for diversity to cover over their lack of ideas, Bullet... concern themselves not. They know what they're good at. Fast paced, immensely rhythmic face-melters with riffs so gargantuan that they could quite easily cause the Great Wall of China to crumble.

Throughout the journey, armed with only their impeccable dress sense, their robust wit and tremendously impressive facial hair, Bullet... tackle subjects which few metal bands are even willing to approach. Concerning themselves with disturbing images of dead bodies and mutilation, coupled with imagery of hearts crushed to a pulp in the battlefield of love they bring to light perfectly the human condition.

Artfully constructed lines such as Limbs are flying/Men are crying/Such a hurtful sight and We are caught in the eye of the storm/All that's left are just bodies to mourn really serve to dig to the very depths of the human psyche and unearth dark truths which few of us are willing to admit.

When the poignant ballad in the form of Heart Burst Into Fire kicks in, a talent for songwriting is displayed in the honing of such infectious tunage that it would make the Fast Food Rockers themselves look distinctly amateurish and laughable.

Melding together pulsing rhythms, gutteral screams and pop sensibilities Bullet For My Valentine (great name btw) construct a one in a million dynamic and unique experience which features such outrageous breakdowns in which the band dispense with vocals alltogether and join in unison with the moody chants of Hey! which are just dripping with class.

What do you mean it's not opposite day? Crap, oh well, I'm not writing the review again,so tough. Final advice: Eject, Aim, Throw. Aiming is optional.

Worst review I've ever read. You've said absolutely nothing to qualify your dislike for the album and instead resorted to a dialogue of pathetic sarcasm. Think you need a career change!

These bastards can go to hell....this album is pure genius, you fuckers should remove this from their website

Haha! Great review. The Poison was a better. And it is a pretty bad album - lyricly anyway. Sorry, I cannot spell. Anyway, musicly its..."ok". I will buy it, but the debut and EP remain on top.

i think that theyre album shows a change for the boys, none the less all bands do it. and i think that the sarcasm in the review is unjustified. they've done well.

I was disappointed, it's a throw away album for me... The Poison and especially their debut were incredible, this album lacks in so many areas they were good at earlier.. well, lets hope for a better one next time guys.

Album artwork was cool though.

Debut album was amazing for me. But when i listened this new album, it was obviously different from The Poison. Sound was different and cool, found it amazing too.

But i was shocked when i'd read that nonsense review. Check your review again plz !!

I think a couple of peeps that commented above need to repent and visit http://www.emostudent.com - a couple of good articles there.

BTW, the album cover Rocks!

My oh my. There's alot of hate going on here.

If it weren't for the fact that it's coming from BFMV's remnant of fans I'd be worried.

Lets face it boys and girls, they are getting worse rather than getting better.

I'm not going to question your opinion of the album, but like the others said, this is an incredibly poor review. You have a long, boring speech built entirely on sarcasm (I very much doubt it's a metaphor or representative of your experience listening to Scream Aim Fire) and it makes you seem like quite an idiot to be honest.

"Throughout the journey, armed with only their impeccable dress sense, their robust wit and tremendously impressive facial hair..."

A fine example there: you're supposed to be reviewing the album, not taking shots at the band's looks. This shows that you just hate the band and quite obviously haven't given the album a fair chance.

In conclusion, stick to your day job.

Tani

Wow, obviously you should at least tell us why you dislike it so much. Plus the album is decent. Not the best, but it surely did live up to its hype for me.

Also, be more detailed as to why you dislike the album. No one wants to waste time reading BS.

Did nobody actually read this thing properly. If it's opposite day, then you simply reverse the compliments and presto. Makes perfect sense to me, he felt the band never overcame their influences, offered nothing unique to the fray, dealt with the same old corpses and blood imagery but on a 2nd grade level. And generally tried to mix metal and pop in a way that was neither metally or poppy.

As for the facial hair... you gotta admit...

I'm told they're very good technically.

But nonetheless... it's a pile of poo.

I, for one, salute the reviewer.

Write a review humourously and you get slated for not taking an album/band seriously. Give it an in-depth run down of actually why its trash and now your told you are being to harsh, picking at every little detail.

You just cant win.

Pretty much the best review ever, had me laughing alot. This album is the worst piece of crap ever, up their with the likes of Trivium's The Crusade and Avenged Sevenfold's terrible, terrible new, self titled album

I think the poison was better. But scream aim fire isn't bad by any means

wow...this review is badly written

commented 4 months ago

Come on, this review is terrible. I bought the album and i think it's fantastic and it gets etter each time i listen to it. Reading your review, i bet you haven't even listened to it, you don't justify why exactly you have given it such a bad score. I mean, since when was this review on how often they shave, it's on the album, so why don't you talk about its pros and cons, not the bands appearance. BTW, the whole opposite day thing...not funny, witty or smart...some reviewer you are.

I don't understand, every single band changes with each album and you should also take into consideration all the factors that make the albums change. For instance Matt Tuck had an operation which meant the removal of his tonsils so that means his vocal work won't be as good as the past releases. Lyrically its still the same themes apart from some new ones such as 'Scream Aim Fire' and 'Eye Of The Storm'

The guitar work has a much better structure and has also been improved since their last album. The guitarists use a few new techniques and have also increased their speed and even altered their tuning on most songs. The bass is much clearer, well to me anyway and the drums are superb. Combined together this could be, musically, Bullet's best album but if its catchy choruses and full on metalcore you'd best go for 'The Poison'.

However I feel that 'Scream Aim Fire' is as powerful as their other releases but they have just turned up the intensity.

8/10

[No I'm not a real reviewer]

Sorry this album kinda sucks, they claimed it was going to be heavy, but it's really just faster paced. Matthew has bandonded his trademark word dragging clean vocals that captured so many hearts in The Poison (all true bullet fans will know what I'm talking about), but in this album it's like he isn't putting enough effort into the vocals. Very disappointed, why mess with perfection? obviously some jerk off out there thought they weren't hittng the right notes before...

Epic

commented 3 months ago

First, to all the idiots who said "This review sucks because I disagree with it!", you should probably die.

And now, a response to cs65dos' second post:

You can write a funny/humorous review, and even should at time because it's entertaining, but only if you remember to write an actual review of the album and the songs. If you just write jokes about the band or sarcastically mock them without even writing why you don't love the album, people should and will "attack" the critic.

Every thing's well as long at the right amount.

And by the way, I haven't even heard the album yet.

Brendan Brown

commented 3 months ago

Epic: You've hit the nail on the head here, seems to be very much a case of "I love BFMV, hence the reviewer needs to be shot."

As I mentioned before, there are lots of valid points buried in there somewhere, clearly English humour I think. As for the band's image, it was one throwaway line in about 50 or 60. Overreaction much.

[InSatanWeTrust] wins the award for the only intelligent response thus far. Nice to see a proper retort rather than the usual.

Begz

Another fine example of a reviewer who thinks he's holier than the music he's reviewing... arrogant sarcasm and misplaced wit are used in order to demean a truly talented band whose fanbase will undoubtedly grow even bigger with this album. Bullet does stick to what they do best... they write face melters with over the top riffage and blasting drum beats. I AM a musician, and I can appreciate what this band writes in their compositions and arrangements. And I am also a soldier in the Canadian army (Inf, 1 RCR), and the opening lines of "Scream, Aim, Fire", "Kill your enemy, my brothers dead around me"; they hit home with those of us who have served multiple deployments to Afghanistan. I'm sure you believe that the pen is mightier than the sword, but alas, it is not.

"Fuck this battlefield"... Fuck this review

Do you still use swords in Canada? We have guns here now.... and keyboards.

How about that Maj.-Gen. Lessard, what a character eh. "Face melters with over the top riffage and blasting drum beats" on all counts I thought your country's own Protest the Hero were far better.

kyle

commented 3 months ago

the poison was better but this one isnt bad. the review sucked though.

Ledio

commented 3 months ago

Well I thought this review was really bad honestly. I do like Bullet but I'm not biased on bands and I don't say songs by the band I like are good based on the fact I like those bands. At first I really didn't like this album besides a few tracks but then I really listened to all of them and saw how good the songs really were. I do play an instrument and I am in a band so I can truly appreciate what they have done. It's a bit of a disappointment about Matt's voice, I preferred his voice from "The Poison" but besides the voice I thought this album was a pretty good one. Overall if you don't like the album and you're going to make a review use something else besides stating facts about the band and taking shots at how they look and then saying "oh woops it's not opposite day oh well screw it." . That really isn't funny nor is it smart, you should have just gone with the pros and cons of the album even though it seems like most of the review would be all cons but it's all based on opinion. People seem to not like change and some do but it's all just based on preference. The review was really really really bad and the album was pretty good, better than a 2 out of 10 at least.

Ledio

commented 3 months ago

Oh and Aidan Williamson that was a terrible comeback with "Do you still use swords in Canada? We have guns here now…. and keyboards."

You probably know that it's a phrase and you probably do know what it means but the way you tried to destroy it was terrible. That phrase is a great one and you have to experience for yourself it's true power. Douche

Jordan

This is a great review. Bullet suck. Like trivium and all the countless other emo/metalcore bands they have no imagination whatsoever. When Metallica first sung about war, politics and religion on their early albums it was done in a really literate and convincing way. This... It's just so dumb.

Um.

Shika

commented 3 months ago

Here we go again. Why is it whenever a band gets a bad review the fans want to kill the reviewer? It's his honest opinion on BFMV, he doesn't like them. So fucking what.

Instead of sending him hateful comments, close the window and just stop reading it. If he thinks it's a bad album that's his opinion and it shouldn't affect your listening experience.

2/10? possibly 5 or 6/10, but 2? poison was average, this album is average. they are average. unlike most music out there, which is well below-average.

they have way more talent than you will ever have. also, you suck at sarcasm. try harder next time.

AnonymousContributor

Actually, ChaD, I think you'll find that only half the music out there is below average.

But seriously, are you retarded?

ChaDMcBaDD

Heres what i have to say after listening to the album for a lot:

ashes of the innocent is one of the best songs, and it isnt even on the regular version of cd. why would BFMV hide thier one of thier best songs on a special edition type cd?

waking the demon & scream aim fire are also very good. they both are intense and thrashy.

forever and always is a nice ending to the cd. great song.

the rest of the album? eh...so-so. nothing ground breaking or new and exciting.

are the 4 songs i listed worth buying the album? keep in mind ashes of the innocent isnt even on regular version. (i had to download it)

overall....im sticking to a solid 6.5 out of 10.

and are you calling me retarded?

I don't agree with low of a rating, however, I agree, this album isn't that great. I looked at the guitar tabs at this, most of it is pretty basic, some of the melodies are nice. However, in my opinion, too many of the songs sound the same. Scream Aim Fire (the song) is nice, and I like Waking the Demon. The rest of it I don't really care for. I'm not saying they 'suck' as they are a mainstream band. You can't say mainstream sucks (unless it's Fall Out Boy) so, I'd at least give the album around 5-6 rather than 2. Afterall, there wasn't much reasoning in your examples to give it a low score. Compared to their album 'The Poison' which I enjoyed most of the songs from, this album could have been better. The guitars, the vocals, overhyped drumset, it's not the same old good stuff. It's like System of a Down and Korn. Bleh.

Tim

This review was completely terrible. The reviewer needs to be fired, seriously. In his only post, he made some terrible comeback, not even explaining why he made the review in a stupid sarcastic theme or made comments on the band's looks and actions instead of the music he's reviewing. I think the album sucked, and so doest the review.
