British Sea Power: Do You Like Rock Music?

It's always a pleasant experience when a band gets you dusting down your dictionary and British Sea Power over the course of three albums have marked themselves out as a literate as well as creative guitar band.

Album number three doesn't mark a vast change of direction from 2005 release Open Season, the elegant, epic atmosphere remains though occasionally the band introduce a more raw guitar sound evidenced on track two - Lights Out for Darker Skies.

Do You Like Rock Music seems to answer its own question by the time you reach track four. Through the incredible 'No Lucifer' and the truly epic 'Waving Flags' you'll be experiencing two of British Sea Power's finest songs to date.

The album's quirky intellectualism is incredibly uplifting. Waving Flags welcomes Britain's new wave of immigrants from across the Vistua and The Carpathians, Canvey Island tells the story of the 1953 North Sea floods which engulfed the Essex island.

Overall Do You Like Rock Music is a more accomplished album than Open Season, in places it comes close to the brilliance of their debut. It does this by melding the lush panoramic sounds found on its predecessor with the harsher more experimental sounds found on "The Decline of British Sea Power."

So we have ourselves the first great British album of 2008 and whilst we're barely into January there will surely not be many albums that surpass the excellence of 'Do You Like Rock Music'.
