Albums Out This Week: W/C 7th July 2008

07th July 2008 | by Gavin Riley

Long-awaited is a double barrelled word that gets thrown around a lot lately. As if to say that people have their minds focused in expectation during their everyday lives. Sat on the couch eating biscuits, and just waiting. Working on the Samaritans helpline, with waiting on the mind. In that nice circular arena with only a red cloth to entertain your stampeding friend, y'know, just waiting.

While there are no releases likely to have troubled the consciousness repeatedly due out this week, there are a few which it's nice to see on the shelves though. Black Kids get to test their mettle with a debut album, Alkaline Trio make their major label debut (a feat often compared to bullfighting as well) and that Scientology bloke tries to brainwash through the subtle triggers present in his lyrics.

Mind you, who can deny the power of lines such as "Something's wrong 'cause my mind is fading / And everywhere I look / There's a dead end waiting / There is an answer to your qualms / So worship Xenu / and stop your baiting.

Beck: Modern Guilt

Modern Guilt, the eighth studio album by Beck will be released on the man's 38th birthday (in America) and also marks the end of his contract with Interscope Records.  Wherever he goes next, only one thing is sure, somehow, it'll involve Tom Cruise, if he ever gets out of that closet. Outside of North America, the record will be released by XL Recordings. The album features two contributions by Cat Power and is produced by Danger Mouse.

Black Kids: Partie Traumatic

Produced by Bernard Butler, the marks the first ever LP for the Black Kids. Almost Gold will be doing the releasing in the United Kingdom. Columbia Records will take the Stateside release three weeks later on 22 July 2008..

Tricky: Knowle West Boy

The eighth album from British rapper and producer, Tricky, and that's all we have to say about that.

UNKLE: End Titles... Stories for Film

End Titles... Stories for Film is the fourth studio album from British electronic music act Unkle, inspired by feature films created since Unkle's previous 2007 album War Stories. The album features various collaborators including Josh Homme, Black Mountain, Gavin Clark, Joel Cadbury (South) and James Petralli (White Denim).

Albert Hammond Jr.: Como Te Llama

We imagine this album could have a few meanings, the obvious being he wants to brush the llama's fur, the slightly less obvious being that Hammond desires to thwack said llama hard on the back on the head and send him into a state of permanent unconsciousness. Either way, sounds musical.

The Melvins: Nude With Boots

Handed the reins of a forthcoming ATP curate task, it's clear that The Melvins are well liked within music circles. Oil is less clear.

Biffy Clyro: Singles 2001-2005

Controversial release against the wishes of the band, the album is a collection of singles from the band's time with former label Beggars Banquet. Buy this if you wish, but the band will hate you forever, and don't think they can't find out where you live, they're the Biffy, they can do anything.

Alkaline Trio: Agony and Irony

It's a major label debut alert! Will there be a sudden inclusion of dance beats, one sole swear word and the mangling of peoples faces into coffee shop tables? Granted, the latter has only been done by Against Me! so far, but there's time.

Andy Yorke: Simple

Simple is the debut solo album by Oxford singer-songwriter Andy Yorke, sibling of Radiohead's Thom Yorke. Rumoured to take its title from Andy's nickname when he was younger, perhaps.

Cute Is What We Aim For: Rotation

One can only imagine what the discussion went like when they chose that name. They probably have a supposedly interesting story about how it was the last words of their cancer stricken friend, but we reckon it's more likely a quote from the Powerpuff girls. Needless to say, they ain't cute, nor clever and are about as fun as..... well, cancer.

The Dodos: Visiter

Re-release of the well-received second album by the formerly extinct animals.

Arms: Kids Aflame

Kids Aflame is the product of Todd Goldstein, released on Southern Records.

Bodies Of Water: A Certain Feeling

The second album from Secretly Canadian's Bodies Of Water. Can't help but love that label's name can you!

Apse: Spirit

Re-release of an album originally out in 2006. Now signed up to ATP.

Emarosa: Relativity

First album from Johnny Craig-fronted outfit.

Teasing Lulu: Black Summer

Debut album from Brighton rockers recorded at the Levellers studio in January 2008, contains the three singles Ex Factor , Waste Of Time & Cat & Mouse, all produced by the Stranglers' JJ Burnel.

Secondsmile: Years

Second album from the Big Scary Monsters group.

Battle Of Land And Sea: Battle Of Land And Sea

An album originally released in January 2008, the Portland, OR singer-songwriter re-releases her self-titled album this, so many re-releases, are they hoping that people will forget that they bought it already and duplicate their purchases?

Mika Miko: 666

Los Angeles band Mika Miko, not to be confused with the British/Lebonese pop singer, y'know, like that idiotic hitman did. If we'd of wanted him to travel to L.A. we'd of paid for his airfare wouldn't we. Sorry boys, we'll replace that hamster when we get around to it. Honestly, just because it works with a horse doesn't mean that a hamster is a viable alternative.
