Okkervil River Live at SxSW 2008 - Stubbs

SxSW 2008 Live: Okkervil River

16th March 2008 | by Ross Riley

For Okkervil River tonight's show amounts to a homecoming and the band, who setup and started gigging right here in Austin, were assured of a warm reception from SxSW.

Austin did not disappoint and Stubbs, one of the larger venues in the main festival area, was packed to witness a startlingly good performance from the band.

Kicking off with 'The President's Dead' which broke out into an excellent opening jam, the band dedicated the show to guitarist Brian Cassidy, who will be leaving the band after these shows.

Most popular tonight was the material from latest album 'The Stage Names', an album that most people here tonight must be in possession of.

'Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe' gets added depth with the live performance and 'A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene' is equally brilliant, improved by the hand claps that are dutifully supplied by the enthusiastic audience.

So Austin was probably not the toughest crowd they've had to please but nonetheless Stubbs emptied after the show in a very pleased state after an excellent live show.
