It feels like an eternity since Pete & The Pirates got round to releasing their debut album, Little Death. What's shocking is that Little Death actually only came out in February of this year.
With that fresh in mind, Strange Glue hopped onto the train to catch the Reading band at Exeter's superb Cavern venue. The night started off with a bang from supports Paper Heroes and Ex Lovers, whether that be the splintering guitar strings or the bang of a snare splitting, it just seemed to spark the night alight.
Each band had their fair share of technical problems but all three overcame the obstacles placed in front of them to deliver riveting and stunning performances.
Indie/Pop/Rock band Paper Heroes of London started off the show bringing the crowd to attention with fiery riffs, mixed with the raw gravelly vocals from Matt Weedon who sweated rather profusely - but that was a given considering the effort and emotion he was putting into the show - so much so that after pummeling his guitar to an inch of its life, he was forced to borrow another one.
ExLovers, also from London, took the crowd to new levels with a skilled energetic show. Despite being lighter on their feet, the crowd was enjoying everything being given to them. The band looked quite sheepish on stage to start off with but thankfully the duo (who may or may not be Ex-Lovers) relaxed and produced a resplendent set only to be stopped in their tracks by the snare splitting on their closing song. Still, the band will have garnered many a new fan from this performance.
A surprisingly load roar welcomed Pete And The Pirates to the stage. The band weren't content with showcasing the material from Little Death, as they kick-started their brand new tour with some new material. Plans for a second LP are obviously well under way, and the band made the announcement that ''Jennifer'' would be the first single to be taken from it. For a track so new, vocalist Thomas Sanders seemed taken aback at the frenzy of the crowd.
Sadly, more technical problems ensued, this time with the bassist's amplifier going a bit Pete Tong. But by curfew time, the band had regrouped, finishing the set with the song that started it all off for Pete & The Pirates - ''Come On Feet''.

The woman from Ex-Lovers looks like Jennifer Connelly and Eliza Dushku's lovechild.
Yet, I still cannot decide if she registers on the hotness scale. Argh: it's Carrie Anne Moss all over again.
