Photos, Live Review: This Will Destroy You @ White Rabbit, Plymouth

14th October 2008 | by Aidan Williamson

Texas' second to the post-rock throne have come to our shores to help explain to us exactly why vocalists are so passe.

The underground venue tonight played host to numerous bands which circled the post-rock/indie/hardcore divides. We've picked just three to represent the gig as a whole.

Bristol lends us their quietly-inflected epicality from The Naturals. Then This Will Destroy You statemates Mom (not to be confused with equally brilliant Icelandic band mum) show that two is surely good company. Comprising just two men on various stringed instruments, (cello, violin, acoustic guitar) despite relying on pre-recorded elements, the duo stole the show with their subtle, stirring and vivid performance which truly accentuated almost every emotion known to mankind.

Something we learned from watching performances of Explosions in the Sky is that post-rock is a tricky beast to bring to the live arena. Amidst the feedback drenched distortion of the live performance, many elements are left on the floor as the crashing cacophony of the pummelled sections are lost in translation. This fact doesn't make the recorded version any less impactive though.
