Johnny Whitney is an ambiguous man by all accounts. Since his beginnings in music he's always had a stage presence which exudes complete nonchalance, even though in his early days he was often bottled for having the demeanour of the limp-wristed. Yet minutes before stage time, he insists on changing into shirt, waistcoat and tie; go figure.

With their debut album "Take Me To the Sea" now fully locked in, the boys - performing tonight as a five-piece - have a wealth of material to draw upon. Playing for over an hour it's difficult to find nary a duff creation amongst them. Whitney has clearly realised that his vocals have the potential for extreme annoyance over long periods of time, and as such he pulls back from the higher registers he used to call home, mixing it up with Cody Votolato, who provides the 'everyman' backing vocals.

While not as madcap in their performance as one could imagine, there's a fair amount of jumping, standing, head-butting, writhing and dramatic gesticulating to ensure that the eyes are rarely receiving duplicate frames. Despite being smaller than the majority of these guys are used to, the crowd seem more than willing to muck in with the atmosphere creation. A mid-set invitation for the audience to join the band behind the crush barrier is eagerly RSVP'd and from then on, it's like one little deranged family sharing a meal; if you happen to consider streaming sweat a traditional cuisine that is.

Performance wise they're definitely up with BB. They have a lot of great songs, but they don't quite carry the power of their tributary. Mind you, that might just be because the album's not out yet and needs some extra time spent on it.

I may be alone in this opinion, but I would certainly consider them superior to Neon Blonde.
